What are phthalates?

Phthalates are chemicals that increase durability and elasticity in plastic products. These phthalates can be found in many cleaning soaps, hair sprays, and fragrance oils used to make products smell better.

They enter the body by encountering food we eat, particles in the air, and can be found in dust. The CDC has found measurable levels of these chemicals in the general population.

Are phthalates harmful?

Yes, the harmful effects of these chemicals have been heavily studied in animals and in high levels can have negative effects on the human body.

Harvard has found these chemicals to be harmful to our reproductive systems and testosterone an important hormone in our bodies. They call for the restriction or outright ban of phthalates chemicals.

This is further backed by the National Health Institute that some of these chemicals and “detrimental to the reproductive, neurological, and developmental systems…” Additionally, these chemicals can be irritating to the skin, nose, and mouth.
